Stay in a piece of Walthamstow history. Market Arches is a three-bedroom, first-floor apartment inside the former Cock Tavern, which served the High Street for more than 300 years. Tall arched windows look out over Walthamstow Market, the open-plan living room has a dining table for 6, and two shower rooms keep busy mornings moving. Sleeps 6, with St James Street station just a 3-minute walk away.
Three-bedroom, first-floor apartment in Walthamstow’s former Cock Tavern, a pub for more than 300 years. Arched windows over the market, dining for 6, two superking bedrooms, a twin room, and two shower rooms. 3 minutes’ walk to St James Street station.
Market Arches is a three-bedroom, first-floor apartment on Walthamstow High Street in East London, sleeping up to 6 guests. It sits inside the former Cock Tavern, a pub that traded on this spot from at least 1708 until 2016. Its tall arched Victorian windows look straight out over Walthamstow Market. The open-plan living, kitchen and dining room is the heart of the apartment. A large navy velvet corner sofa, a dining table for 6 and industrial pendant lights make it an easy place to get together after a day out. Two bedrooms have zip-and-link superking beds and the third has two single beds, so it suits families, groups of friends and colleagues sharing on a work trip. With 2 shower rooms, nobody waits long in the morning.
Walthamstow Market starts right outside the front door. It's one of the longest outdoor street markets in Europe, with food stalls, cafés and independent shops all within a short walk. St James Street station is about 3 minutes away on foot, and Walthamstow Central on the Victoria line is around 13 minutes, so central London is easy to reach. Walthamstow appears in the Domesday Book as Wilcumestou, which means "the place where guests are welcome". The colourful mural opposite still says it: everyone belongs.
Please note that the apartment is up one flight of stairs and has no private parking. It overlooks a working market, so expect some street noise and early set-up from Tuesday to Saturday.
Nearby Attractions:
- Walthamstow Market: Outside the door
- St James Street Station: 13 min walk
- Walthamstow Central: 13 min walk
Ideal guests: families, groups of friends, colleagues and contractors, visitors to friends and family in East London, guests who want central London without central London prices.
Four Reasons to Stay
Three centuries of East End history: The Cock Tavern served Walthamstow from at least 1708 until 2016, when this street was still called Marsh Street. Now the old pub's first floor is a modern apartment, and the original arched windows are still in place.
Room for 6, with 2 shower rooms. Two superking bedrooms and a twin room sleep 6 comfortably. Two shower rooms keep busy mornings moving.
A proper place to gather. A dining table for 6 sits beside a large corner sofa in one bright, open-plan room, so the whole group can eat and relax together.
The market on your doorstep, London on the line: Walthamstow Market trades below the windows from Tuesday to Saturday. St James Street station is a 3-minute walk away, and the Victoria line runs from Walthamstow Central.

All of Greater London is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), so check your vehicle before you travel. For most guests, the train is the easiest way to arrive.
About the Area:
Walthamstow, known locally as E17, is one of East London's liveliest neighbourhoods. It mixes a traditional market town with a strong independent food, drink and arts scene. Walthamstow Market has run along the High Street since 1885, and its stalls still sell everything from fruit and fabrics to street food. A short walk east is Walthamstow Village, a conservation area of old cottages, pubs and cafés around Orford Road. To the north, Lloyd Park and the William Morris Gallery celebrate the designer, who was born here in 1834. For open space, Walthamstow Wetlands has walking and cycling trails around ten reservoirs, and Epping Forest is a short train ride away. With the Victoria line and Weaver line both close by, it's an easy, good-value base for exploring London.
Walking times are approximate, worked out from the postcode. Check them on Google Maps before publishing.
